Eric Cohen was introduced & welcomed as the speaker for this month with his talk titled “The Holocaust – My Family”. Eric dealt with the subject matter in a most sensitive & positive manner. Whilst undoubtedly there were many events that were traumatic for his family at the time & subsequently, Eric was able to focus on many positive aspects & look towards the families that had survived in spite of the horrific situation.

Eric described how his grandfather had emigrated from Austria to London in the early 1900’s but unfortunately succumbed to an untimely death in Auschwitz with his wife. Eric’s father had also been incarcerated in Bergen Belsen, and although he did survive his incarceration, the impact on him later in life was quite severe.

Eric’s prowess as a teacher shone through, his presentation was delivered with enthusiasm & humour, alongside the horrors. He regularly gives talks to the younger generation about these matters, but the overarching theme is a focus on “hope, peace and love”.
