It was great to see so many ladies attending this months meeting – 51 members & 2 visitors were welcomed by our President.
The monthly business report commenced with our Secretary announcing the results of the Resolutions. Hartford WI have voted for “Bystanders can be lifesavers”. CFWI have been notified of this result & this has been transferred to National. The accumulated votes from all respective WI’s have reflected Hartford WI’s own vote with “Bystanders can be lifesavers” being voted for this years Resolution.
Details of two talks organised by CFWI were given to members -“Inspiring Women: the early years of the WI” on 10th April and “Why Does Archimedes Matter to Cheshire ?”, on 19th July.
Members were encouraged to enter into our very own Hartford Show on 4th June 2025 followed by our Arley show on 27th & 28th June There is a wide range of categories & it is hoped everyone will participate, have some fun & enjoy the skills & artistry of fellow members.
Members were reminded by our Treasurer annual subscriptions were due on 1st April 2025. Information was also given to members regarding the WI Supporter package should any members prefer to take up this option.
Having concluded the monthly business meeting, a poem entitled “Refugees” by Brian Bilston was read by a member & our President. This was a thought provoking piece of work & provided a great segue to introduce our speaker, Pauline Lowrie from Care4Calais.
Pauline commenced her presentation by posing several questions to the audience & garnering their perception about asylum seekers v refugees. She also outlined the current jurisdiction of the Illegal Migration Act 2023. Pauline’s talk continued by profiling life in the refugee camps in Calais & the work carried out by Care4Calais, this included distribution of clothing, campaigning, advocating a legal representative & assisting in educational needs. Most importantly Pauline & her colleagues provided support, a listening ear & shoulder to lean on.
In providing support Care4Calais also organise monthly activities for refugees & asylum seekers such as craft groups, music & bingo.
