Another warm evening in August. It was heartwarming to see a long standing member return from a recent illness.
Members were advised the October meeting will be held on 8th instead of 1st October. Information was given out regarding the Xmas meal, which this year will be held at Hartford Hall. Deposits will be due at the September meeting. The soup & roll morning to be held in October has been cancelled, due to limited numbers attending. An afternoon tea has been arranged at Nunsmere Hotel, 29th September – anyone wishing to attend should pay in full at the September meeting.
Information was distributed to members regarding a fundraising walk to be held on 16th October at Delamere Forest in support of National Restart Heart Day, a zoom workshop on 28th October hosted by Cas Holmes – Artistic Practice & Life in Stitch, & nominations for group officers & co-ordinators for Cheshire Federation.
Following our recent successful show at Arley, it was fantastic to see Hartford WI had featured in a full page spread in Arley’s recent brochure, which will be followed up with an article in Cheshire Life.
A number of Hartford WI members are currently knitting ventilator bonnets for the neo-natal unit at Leighton Hospital.
Our speaker this month was Kath Reynolds who gave a highly entertaining talk on “Bringing up baby in the 50’s & 60’s”, taking ladies down Memory Lane.
Kath talked about assembling layettes for babies which often included plastic pants, flannelette nighties, bootees, bonnets & petticoats.
It was interesting to learn how ante-natal care has changed over the years & the traditions such as “churching”, fathers not being present at birth & christening gowns being handed down from generations are not as common today.
Ladies were taken back to the time of washing nappies, baby food recommendations (which often contained alcohol !), prams with cat nets & sun shades, bathing in the kitchen sink & baby sleeping in a chest drawer.
